Rapper Drake Slammed For Mocking Mental Health

CANADIAN RAPPER Drake has been criticised by fans who accused the performer of mocking mental health in one of his latest tracks.

The Controlla rapper shared four new singles on his Apple Music OVO Sound Radio show to coincide with his 30th birthday and in one track, Two Birds One Stone, seemingly takes a jab at at rappers Pusha T and Kid Cudi.

“You were the Man on the Moon, now you go through your phases, life of the angry and famous,” Drake raps.

Rap rival Kid Cudi famously described himself as “the man on the moon” in an anthem from his debut album, A Kid Named Cudi.

Fans have slammed the rapper for appearing to mock Cudi who recently opened up about his struggles with mental health.

The 32-year-old rapper, real name Scott Mescudi, announced on social media on October 4 that he was checking himself into rehab in order to deal with severe anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.

His candid admission was met with overwhelming support, sparking a trending hashtag about mental illness among black men: #YouGoodMan.

Drake continues in his diss track to imply that Cudi is dependent on the anti-depressant Alprazolam known more commonly as Xanax.

He raps: “You stay xanned and perked up. So when reality set in you don’t gotta face it.”

Unimpressed fans have accused the award winning rapper of reinforcing the negative stigma surrounding black men and mental health.

@CulturallyAlive commented: “Drake just reinforced the black stigma that mental illness is a weakness, a flaw and not the disease it is. Get well Kid Cudi.”

Other social media users were much more critical of the rapper himself.

@GuruVarun1 wrote: “I’m sorry @Drake, but making fun of @KidCudi and referring to mental health issues as a “phase” doesn’t make you cool, it makes you a prick.”

@MsUnitedIStand added: “LOST ALL RESPECT for @Drake. Your writers couldn’t come up with better music THAN to make fun of someone’s mental illness?”

Drake’s insult comes on the back of an online rant in which his rival slammed rappers for claiming to be “top five and be having 30 people write songs for them.”

Cudi’s comments came ahead of his mental health admission and was interpreted as a swipe at Drake.
