Treating Type 2 diabetes costs the British NHS up to £10bn a year, but a leading doctor at Kings College London believes there is a way to cut back on costs.
Professor Francesco Rubino says bariatric surgery is the “closest thing to a cure” and should be given to more patients who are not responding to medication.
Just 1% of those who are eligible under obesity guidelines access surgery.
Professor Rubino would like to see the guidelines widened to also include Type 2 patients who are not obese but might benefit.
