The World’s Greatest Cricketer Sir Gary Sobers Celebrates 80th Birthday Today.

gary sobersBarbados and cricketing fans worldwide once more wait with baited breath as the ‘World’s Greatest Cricketer’ approaches another monumental milestone – his 80th birthday.

Sir Garfield Sobers’ contribution to the great game has long cemented his place in history’s page; surpassed only by his humility and passionate efforts to promote West Indies cricket to the ends of the earth.

Fans from around the world are expected to converge on the island of Barbados for this momentous occasion dubbed ‘Sir Garry: 80 Not Out Season of Celebration.’  Running from July 3-31, this exciting calendar of activities will include the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament from July 3-20, a keenly anticipated Celebrity T20 Cricket match on July 28 at Kensington Oval and will culminate with a gala reception entitled an ‘Evening with Sir Garry’ at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Friday, July 29. Celebrations will also feature an invitational golf tournament at the world famous Sandy Lane Golf and Country Club on Sunday, July 31.

The T20 match will bring together several local, regional and international past and present cricketing celebrities including Brian Lara, Carl Hooper, the legendary duo Courtney Walsh and Sir Curtly Ambrose, former England player, Freddie Flintoff, India’s Ravi Shastri and Pakistan’s Rashid Latif. Barbadian cricketing heroes Collis King, Sherwin Campbell and Philo Wallace will also take their place among some of the game’s most prolific players, who will compete as the Sir Garfield Sobers Masters team, managed by Sir Clive Lloyd.

They will go up against a youthful squad of all-stars managed by Sir Vivian Richards. Fans can expect a clash of cricket’s past, present and future with the element of the party cricket energy which can only be experienced in the Caribbean.
