An American salon is under investigation after a teenager contracted HIV after getting a hair weave at a salon. According to the police report, the teenager has never been sexually active and not an intravenous drug user. The teenager contracted the virus after receiving a sew in hairstyle.
According to the teenager, while receiving the sew-in weave, her scalp was punctured several times with the needle, causing bleeding in the scalp which later became scab wounds. “I didn’t think anything of it, it’s happened before whenever i’ve gotten a sew-in” says the teenager. Three weeks after getting the sew-in, the teenager began to experience flu-like symptoms accompanied by aching muscles and rash, all early symptoms of an HIV infection.
The teen visited the emergency room where several tests were performed and questions were asked. She was admitted for a week of observation and further tests, after which her parents were contacted and asked to come in. It wasn’t until a series of questions were asked that the teen recalled being wounded by the needles.
The family has opted to remain anonymous while they pursue legal actions against the salon, which has already been fined by the State of Georgia.
