Chaka Khan Owes Me Rent : Says Angry Landlord
R&B singer Chaka Khan is facing legal action over non-payment of rent. The 58-year-old singing legend agreed to rent a New Jersey apartment for two weeks for about £12,000 – But left after spending only one week and owing £6,000 to landlord Maryse Selit.
“I am very angry because I trusted her.” said Selit. “I usually ask people to pay the entire rent up front, but Chaka said she could only pay half in advance. She said she was waiting to be paid for a gig and would then pay the balance.”
The terms of the agreement was negotiated by Chaka and her sister Tammy McClary who is also her manager and who signed the lease, according to Selit.
“Chaka and her entourage stayed for one week, but I am stuck with two.” said an angry Selit. “I told them that I had someone who was willing to pay the rent for the entire two weeks. They lied to me knowing that they could not cover the full rent.”
The mansion which is fully furnished is located in New York City’s leafy suburb of Watchung, New Jersey, and can accommodate 20 people.
According to the lease Chaka agreed to rent the mansion from June 14 through to June 29 for a total of £12,850. A balance of £6,000 was due on June 19, but the 10-time grammy award winner and her entourage simply did a runner, Selit said.
“I know I am going to sue them for my money. I was trying to settle this the easiest way possible.” adds Selit. “Now they are acting like I don’t exist and I am furious. They are not getting away with this.”
